The Test Taker's Guide to the TOEFL Speaking Section

As one of the four sections of the TOEFL examination, the speaking section aims to evaluate a candidate’s communication skills, as well as their metacognitive and cognitive strategies. As a TOEFL test taker taking classes for TOEFLreview Philippines, it is vital that you understand the test format and guidelines of this TOEFL section.

TOEFL Speaking Section Format
The TOEFL speaking test takes about 20 minutes and consists of six different task types.
·         Speaking tasks 1 and 2 are independent tasks, which means you don’t have to listen or read anything before answering them.

·         Speaking tasks 3, 4, 5, and 6 are integrated tasks, which means you listen or read something before answering the question.

Speaking Task 1
Task format:                    In the first speaking task, you are asked an open-ended question based on general topics where you need to express your thoughts correctly.

Time frame:                     15 seconds to prepare and 45 seconds to speak

Speaking Task 2
Task format:                    The second speaking task also requires you to answer an open-ended question. However, unlike the first speaking task, you must choose between two options.

Time frame:                     15 seconds to prepare and 45 seconds to speak

Speaking Task 3
Task format:                     First, you will read a general announcement about an activity at a University. Then, you will listen to a dialogue between two people about the announcement. Once you are finished with both activities, you have to prepare a statement regarding the general announcement.

Time frame:                     45 seconds (reading and listening activities), 30 second to prepare, and 60 seconds to speak. 

Speaking Task 4
Task format:                     You will read a short passage about a particular academic topic. Then, you will listen to a more specific lecture about the same topic from the passage. Once you are done with both activities, you have to prepare for your discussion about the academic passage.

Time frame:                     45 seconds (reading and listening activities), 30 second to prepare, and 60 seconds to speak. 

Speaking Task 5
Task format:                     You will only listen to dialogue between two people. After you finish the activity, you have to prepare your response to the dialogue.

Time frame:                     45 seconds (listening activity), 20 seconds to prepare, and 60 seconds to speak.
Speaking Task 6
Task format:                     You will listen to a lecture about a specific topic. After that, you need to prepare your opinions about the topic discussed in the lecture.

Time frame:                      45 seconds (listening activity), 20 seconds to prepare, and 60 seconds to speak.
