TOEFL Exam in Cebu, Philippines

In the past, taking English proficiency exams like the TOEFL or the Test of English as a Foreign Language was difficult and a bit expensive. TOEFL Speaking Tasks and Questions 2013

There are a lot of Filipinos taking the TOEFL or the Test of English as Foreign Language who are apprehensive with the TOEFL speaking section. Candidates who take the TOEFL speaking exam has a target score that they need to achieve before they can process their applications overseas. Once they fail to get this, they need to take it again. Yes, it can be a waste of time and money once you are not prepared enough to take the TOEFL speaking examination. Hence, for first time takers, here is some information on the TOEFL speaking tasks and their sample questions that were used in 2013.

First and foremost, the TOEFL speaking test has six different questions which are divided into two different tasks – the independent and the integrated tasks. The test is recorded and runs for about an hour to be completed.

The first and second tasks of the TOEFL speaking test are an independent task. This task will measure the ability of the candidate to speak about a familiar topic.
 
If your friend were having difficulty deciding his or her major, what advice would you give him or her and why? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
  • List one recommendation for the school you have recently attended.
  • Do you think bicycle will still be widely used in the future or replaced by other means of transportation?
  • Some students prefer to study at home; others prefer to study in the library. Which do you think is best and why? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

The third task of the TOEFL speaking is a reading and conversation task. This integrated task asks the candidate to integrate the essential details in the conversation to the reading passage.
  • Ways of advertising the school art show
  • The man expresses his opinion of the university’s plan to add evening computer classes in the fall. State his opinion and explain the reasons he gives for holding that opinion.

The fourth task asks the candidate will read an academic topic followed by a short lecture regarding the topic. The task is to incorporate the information in the reading with the lecture. Sample questions are as follows:
  • Verbal and Non-verbal Communication: Explain verbal and non-verbal communication by using the examples provided by the professor.  
  • Classroom Strategies on Student Attention: Using the main point and examples from the lecture, describe some classroom strategies on how to keep students attentive.

The fifth task is a conversation where the candidate needs to decide on which option is best for the speaker. He or she needs to provide reasons for this choice. Here are some examples:

  • Class Trouble: Describe the man’s problem and the two suggestions the woman makes about how he could deal with it. What do you think the man should do and why?
  • Time Management: Schedule conflict between the literature class and the basketball training.
The last task is a lecture where the candidate needs to summarize the information from the listening passage. 
 
Examples are as follows:
  • Using the main point and examples from the lecture, explain two self-protection techniques plants use by attracting predators of herbivores.
  • Using the points and examples given by the professor, explain two types of visual elements that artists use to express meaning or emotion.
