TOEFL and NPTE; Do You Need to Take TOEFL Before Taking NPTE

People have been asking the difference between the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the  National Physical Therapist Examination (NPTE). These individuals are confused whether TOEFL is dependent on NPTE or vice versa. To better understand the two, let us define and discuss the basic information of each test.

What is TOEFL?

The TOEFL test is an English proficiency examination. Offered by ETS or the English Testing System, most people who have taken this test took the iBT format – a computer-based test. Having said that it is an English proficiency test, the TOEFL aims to provide a certification of an individual’s competency with the use of the English language. The individual’s competence is gauged through different questions on the four core language skills in English – reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The coverage of the exam is based on varied subjects such as science, history, architecture, sociology, music and many more. The highest score one can get from the TOEFL examination is 120 having a perfect score of 30 in the four area skills.

What is NPTE?

In the NPTE, it is also a computer-based examination; however, it is not an English proficiency examination. Filipinos taking the NPTE needs to pass the exam to get a licensure – to be able to work as a physical therapist and physical therapist assistant abroad. Offered by the FSBPT or the Federal State Board of Physical Therapist, it aims to measure knowledge and abilities required of entry level physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs). The coverage of the exam embraces most areas in physical therapy such as cardiovascular and lymphatic systems, neuromuscular and nervous systems, integumentary system, and metabolic and endocrine systems. The highest score one can get from the NPTE is 800 with a passing score of 600.

Do I need TOEFL before I can take the NPTE?

Well, it all depends on the candidate’s credentialing. What does this mean? For example, if the candidate for the NPTE is applying for NYSED or the New York State Education Department, the candidate does not necessarily need to take the TOEFL test prior to the NPTE. However, if the candidate is applying for Type 1 Certificate, the candidate needs to take the TOEFL first before challenging the NPTE. Moreover, if an individual is applying for a tourist visa, there is no need for the TOEFL but for EB2 and H-1B visas, TOEFL is needed.

This means that the candidate needs to be certain what kind of credentialing and visa he or she is applying for. However, to add more credentials to your profile it is best to have an English competency exam certificate to support your applications abroad. This will verify your efficiency and productivity at work through good communication in the English language.

Moreover, there will be a short briefing about the examination where rules before, during, and after the explanation are explained by the test administrators. In addition, check-in before the examination will happen. This is a process wherein the test administrators will ask the candidates to fill up a confidentiality form on the TOEFL. The IDs are checked including the confirmation sheet emailed by ETS. Once the needed identification has been checked, the candidate will be photographed and a room assignment will appear on the computer screen. Once the candidate is checked in, the exam begins.

The TOEFL exam will be much easier if candidates know the importance of being in a TOEFL review center. TOEFL Speaking Questions You Need to Be Familiar With

Filipinos are known globally to be one of the best speakers of the English language. Well, it is not surprising as English has been in used in day-to-day conversations and even in the medium of instruction in schools and universities. There should be no problem in speaking but there are Filipinos who are not confident in doing speaking examinations most especially in the TOEFL or the Test of English as a Foreign Language. In fact, the TOEFL speaking is much easier compared to other test wherein one has to complete the test in a one-on-one interview setup. To be able to get a good score in the TOEFL speaking, one must be familiar with the questions and learn the techniques in responding to the tasks.

There are two different tasks in the TOEFL speaking section. The first section is the independent task where one is evaluated with the strong points presented in the response. It asks the candidates about their personal hobbies, choices, interests or events in the first question and it asks the candidate to choose one of two options on the second question. Here are some common questions asked in the TOEFL Independent speaking task.

  • What is your favorite city in the world and why? Please include details and examples in your response.
  • Describe an activity you would like to do on weekends and explain why. Include details and examples to support your explanation.
  • What do you think is the most helpful device ever invented and why do you think so? Include details and examples to support your explanation.
  • Some people like listening to music while they study, and other would rather not listen to music while studying. Which do you prefer and why?
  • Some people like eating dinner at home on their birthdays, while others like going out to nice restaurants for their birthdays. Which do you prefer and why?
  • Some people prefer to work during the day, while others prefer to work at night. Which way do you prefer and why?
  • The second task in the speaking test is an integrated task wherein the candidates response will solely base on the information and details presented in the reading passage or a conversation or lecture. Candidates need to be reminded that topics on these tasks are in an academic setting. Here are common questions on this task.
  • The woman expresses her opinion of the announcement made by the Construction Office. State her opinion and explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion.
  • The professor discusses problems faced by lawyers and psychologists. Explain how these problems relate to the concept of role conflict.
  • The students discuss two possible solutions to the woman’s problem. Describe the problem. Then state which of the two solutions you prefer and explain why.
  • Using points and examples from the talk, explain the invention of the opera and valves helped create the modern orchestra.

The key in creating a good response to the TOEFL Speaking task is practicing on the common questions found in the test. The more practice you get with these topics, the better you can come up with ideal and smart responses. Moreover, being in a TOEFL review center can help enhance your speaking skills through their training and mock interviews.
