TOEFL Scores - How Are They Computed?

Have you already taken the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination? What was your score? Do you wish to take it again and get a better score?

a sample TOEFL certificate indicating the taker's score (photo source)

Some candidates for the TOEFL examination are already satisfied with the scores. These are usually the required scores of companies and academic institutions that individuals – professionals and students – are applying for. However, for some, they take the TOEFL exam again to attain their personal target scores.
The TOEFL test is a computer-based examination using the four language skills – reading, listening, speaking and writing – to gauge the candidate’s expertise in using the English language. In the TOEFL, the perfect score one can get from the examination is 120 with a perfect score of 30 from each section. In some companies and schools, there are specific scores that candidates need to obtain to comply with their requirements. However, do you know how the test is scored? Here’s how.

The ETS or the Educational Testing System score the exam using both human rates and automated scoring methods. Using these two, the score is guaranteed to be complete and accurate of the candidate’s ability.  The automated scoring method is basically used in the reading and listening parts of the exam. The automated scoring method has advantages; however, it does not directly measure the effectiveness of the language response and appropriateness of the content. This is the reason why human raters are employed to do the scoring that involves evaluating the quality of ideas, content and form. With the combination of human scoring for the content and meaning plus the automated scoring method for linguistic features, the candidate’s score is sure to be consistent and with the highest quality.

Some may be wondering the efficiency of these human raters. ETS raters have undergone extensive training before they can work for ETS. After this training, a certification test is conducted and is calibrated daily. This calibration covers task familiarization, guidance on scoring the task, and practice on a range of responses. These raters are constantly monitored. This pool of raters is from different cultural backgrounds making them diverse and scoring is fair. This removes the biases among the judgments of raters.

It is important for candidates for the TOEFL examination to understand how the TOEFL is scored. This will make the candidates think that the scoring is fair and accurate. They will work harder on their speaking and writing sections as these are also rated by a pool of human raters.

TOEFL Writing Tips: What Mistakes to Avoid

Writing is never easy. This is the very reason why people practice writing essays and correspondence when they take the Test of English as Foreign Language or the TOEFL exam. The writing section of the TOEFL is one of the dreaded sections for its technicalities in writing and the difficult tasks presented.

Having this in mind, individuals who are taking the TOEFL find good TOEFL review centers to help them develop and improve their writing skills. Some companies and universities have set a score that should be attained or else their applications will not be accepted. In TOEFL review centers, candidates are taught how to write effectively and appropriately. However, aside from the positive things that candidates have to bear in mind, it is also right to know the things that candidates need to know to avoid. Here are some points on what mistakes to avoid during the TOEFL writing section.

•    The use of ellipsis

Never use ellipsis for it shows that your vocabulary is insufficient that you cannot explain the things that you want to say. If you cannot think of a word that best suits your sentence, then try to think of other ways of expressing it like providing examples rather than end it with ellipsis. Again, it is a big no-no.

•    Slang

Remember that TOEFL is an Academic writing. Your expertise in writing essays and correspondence is tested. Slangs like wanna and coulda must not be used in your writing; instead use want to or could.

•    Number of words

It is okay to write over the maximum of words required. But writing less than what is needed can cause deduction on your score. As much as possible, you have to reach the exact number of words required or more than what is needed. However, do not think that having a longer essay will get you good marks. Do not compromise the substance of your essay with its length.

•    Overused words

Do not constantly repeat the same words in your essay. Think of other vocabulary words that will best represent the idea you want to write. Furthermore, do not overuse the use of transition words in your sentence.

•    Contractions

As much as possible, do not use contractions in your essay. Spell everything out. Like what was mentioned above, TOEFL writing is a formal writing test; hence, formal style in writing is applied.

The best thing about TOEFL review centers is that their mentors are very keen in reviewing their candidates essay and that they give very helpful comments and recommendations of which you cannot take advantage of when you study alone. So, what are you waiting for? Browse on your yellow pages and seek for the best TOEFL review centers in your area today.

TOEFL and NPTE; Do You Need to Take TOEFL Before Taking NPTE

People have been asking the difference between the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the  National Physical Therapist Examination (NPTE). These individuals are confused whether TOEFL is dependent on NPTE or vice versa. To better understand the two, let us define and discuss the basic information of each test.

What is TOEFL?

The TOEFL test is an English proficiency examination. Offered by ETS or the English Testing System, most people who have taken this test took the iBT format – a computer-based test. Having said that it is an English proficiency test, the TOEFL aims to provide a certification of an individual’s competency with the use of the English language. The individual’s competence is gauged through different questions on the four core language skills in English – reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The coverage of the exam is based on varied subjects such as science, history, architecture, sociology, music and many more. The highest score one can get from the TOEFL examination is 120 having a perfect score of 30 in the four area skills.

What is NPTE?

In the NPTE, it is also a computer-based examination; however, it is not an English proficiency examination. Filipinos taking the NPTE needs to pass the exam to get a licensure – to be able to work as a physical therapist and physical therapist assistant abroad. Offered by the FSBPT or the Federal State Board of Physical Therapist, it aims to measure knowledge and abilities required of entry level physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs). The coverage of the exam embraces most areas in physical therapy such as cardiovascular and lymphatic systems, neuromuscular and nervous systems, integumentary system, and metabolic and endocrine systems. The highest score one can get from the NPTE is 800 with a passing score of 600.

Do I need TOEFL before I can take the NPTE?

Well, it all depends on the candidate’s credentialing. What does this mean? For example, if the candidate for the NPTE is applying for NYSED or the New York State Education Department, the candidate does not necessarily need to take the TOEFL test prior to the NPTE. However, if the candidate is applying for Type 1 Certificate, the candidate needs to take the TOEFL first before challenging the NPTE. Moreover, if an individual is applying for a tourist visa, there is no need for the TOEFL but for EB2 and H-1B visas, TOEFL is needed.

This means that the candidate needs to be certain what kind of credentialing and visa he or she is applying for. However, to add more credentials to your profile it is best to have an English competency exam certificate to support your applications abroad. This will verify your efficiency and productivity at work through good communication in the English language.

There should be no problem in speaking but there are Filipinos who are not confident in doing speaking examinations most especially in the TOEFL or the Test of English as a Foreign Language. In fact, the TOEFL speaking is much easier compared to other test wherein one has to complete the test in a one-on-one interview setup. There are two different tasks in the TOEFL speaking section. The first section is the independent task where one is evaluated with the strong points presented in the response. It asks the candidates about their personal hobbies, choices, interests or events in the first question and it asks the candidate to choose one of two options on the second question. Here are some common questions asked in the TOEFL Independent speaking task.

  • The second task in the speaking test is an integrated task wherein the candidates response will solely base on the information and details presented in the reading passage or a conversation or lecture. Candidates need to be reminded that topics on these tasks are in an academic setting. Here are common questions on this task.
  • The woman expresses her opinion of the announcement made by the Construction Office. State her opinion and explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion.

TOEFL Speaking Tips - Strategies on How to Improve Your Skills

Compared with other speaking tests, the TOEFL, otherwise known as the Test of English as a Foreign Language, Speaking Test has been said to be easier and less stressful. For Filipinos, the TOEFL Speaking should be a breeze to them considering their fluency in the English language. But, candidates have to bear in mind that being prepared for the TOEFL Speaking Test is a must for them to achieve their target scores. Now, here are some effective speaking tips candidates for the TOEFL can practice to improve their English speaking skills.

1. Organize your responses

Oftentimes, candidates fail to have a smooth flow of responses to the given tasks. In making responses, especially in the independent tasks, one must remember to include two strong points and details to support the ideas given. Furthermore, with an organized response, there is a huge possibility for candidates not to repeat the same idea to their points; hence, giving them high chances of getting good scores.

2. Learn to use Transitional Words

Ever caught in a sentence where it’s too long and almost unintelligible? Maybe it is time to use transitional words. Transitional words or signal words guide listeners to a response. Using these help raters understand whether a candidate is adding an idea or giving a contradicting notion. They are very helpful as they make answers intelligible and a smooth flow.

3. Build vocabulary

Good responses use words that are perfect for the answer. Having good vocabulary is an advantage as it creates responses that sound smart and appropriate. Candidates can improve their vocabulary by reading books, newspapers, and journals or even watching movies. Learning vocabulary not only is fun but informative as well.

4. Speak English with friends

To be confident in speaking English, speaking the language with friends is highly recommended. Have an English-speaking policy with your friends. This way, everyone gets to practice speaking in English. It is helpful as it develops confidence in speaking and fluency as well.

5. Practice recording responses

Rate yourself. Candidates can do this by getting a recorder or even their phones and record their responses. By doing this, individuals will be able to know what are the weaknesses in their responses – content and delivery – that they should be improving.

With the right amount of practice, any candidates for the TOEFL Speaking Test will be able to get the score that they need. In TOEFL Speaking, one must need to know how to answer the questions properly and the techniques and strategies that make responses better and right. For the 2013 schedules, check it here.

Common Mistakes in TOEFL Speaking

No matter how good one is in communicating in English, there are still predicaments wherein somebody feels uneasy in using the English language in communicating. For Filipinos, the English language has been used in daily conversations typically. It has not been a problem in speaking in English whether in an academic or business setting. Despite the fact that Filipinos are already more comfortable with the usage of the language, taking an English competency evaluation most especially in the speaking area of the TOEFL or the Test of English as a Foreign Language requires a lot of preparation and experience. Filipinos these days want to study with teachers and tutors in TOEFL review centers than studying alone. This is for the reason that TOEFL review centers offer suggestions and tips for these individuals to do well especially in the TOEFL speaking exam.

Candidates decide to work with coaches in a TOEFL review center for them to answer successfully in the evaluation. Without the correct coaching in TOEFL, these candidates for the TOEFL will have a hard time comprehending the speaking test and as a result commit mistakes in giving an answer to the questions. What are these common errors?

First, people must know that there are two different types of tasks in the speaking area. The independent questions are the first section. In the independent question, the person is given a question wherein he or she would need to agree or disagree, choose from solutions or summarize something. With a time limit to speak in 45 seconds, one needs to make a solution that is strong and effective. Most applicants fail to get a good rating on this given that they speak too long. They describe too much with answers. Another error applicants usually make is that they do not develop solid factors behind their ideas. This is because they cannot supply illustrations to support their own thoughts. Another is that some prospects do not fully understand what the question asks. Instead of giving a belief, some agree on the statement. This can result in a low rating when raters assess the answer.

The integrated tasks are questions that are based on a reading and a listening track. Some job hopefuls find this a little tough most significantly when they are not familiar with the issues being outlined. Since this is an integrated question, the answer should only be based on the facts from the reading or the lecture. The problem with some prospects is that they also give their own impression in their response which is really not wanted. The raters assess the response according to how well the person recognized the reading and the lecture. In addition, one typical error prospects make is that they cannot take down the essential specifics from the materials making their replies inadequate.

The advantage of these TOEFL review locations is they instruct the job hopefuls how to lose these common errors and prepare them on how to respond to the tasks correctly.
